About Kenny Allan Smith

Pianist • Vocalist • Choir Director • Musical Director • Producer • Performer

A Life Shaped by Music, Faith & Connection

For Kenny Allan Smith, music has never simply been a career. It has been a lifelong language for expression, faith, community, and connection.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 29, 1965, Kenny discovered that connection at an early age.

Where the Music Began

A childhood passion that became a lifelong calling

At just seven years old, Kenny began formal piano lessons at the Baldwin Music Company, studying classical music before expanding into jazz, blues, gospel, pop, show tunes, and musical theater.
But some of his most important early performances happened much closer to home.
As a child, Kenny loved performing for his mother in their Cincinnati living room. That natural desire to entertain and bring people together soon inspired him to create The Summer Show in his church fellowship hall.
Featuring neighborhood children, classmates, and church friends, what began as a childhood production became a tradition that continued for 10 years.
Education, church, and the foundations of an artist

Finding His Musical Voice

Kenny attended the Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) throughout elementary and high school. At age 13, he began playing piano for his church. His role eventually expanded to accompanying the Inspirational Choir and Mass Choir in the main sanctuary.

At SCPA, his connection to gospel music continued to grow as he became the school’s Gospel Choir Director.

Kenny later continued his musical education at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), focusing on Music Education and Jazz Voice, alongside private studies in piano and voice.

More Than a Performer

Music as a way to teach, lead, and bring people together

From the beginning, Kenny’s relationship with music extended beyond performing.

He accompanied the Cincinnati Boychoir, recorded with the ensemble, sang with Unlimited Voices of Faith, and played piano for the Martin Luther King Chorale.

Working alongside Dr. Catherine Roma, he also taught, played, and sang at Warren Correctional Institution and Lebanon Correctional Institution and later established the Gospel Choir at Wilmington College.

These experiences helped shape an important part of Kenny’s identity as an artist: his ability not only to perform music, but also to teach it, direct it, and use it to create community.

Faith at the Heart of the Music

A ministry that has lasted for generations

In 1983, Kenny founded Kenny Allan Smith’s Peace & Serenity, a gospel choir ministry that would become one of the defining parts of his life.

What began in Cincinnati eventually expanded to include a branch in New York City, creating a musical ministry spanning cities, generations, and more than four decades.
For Kenny, gospel music represents more than a musical style. It reflects the connection between music, ministry, faith, and service that has remained present throughout his journey.
